The City of Maplewood, Minnesota is finding ways to put recycled materials underfoot. If you find yourself on the mile-long trail in South Maplewood, you just might be walking on your neighbor's old roof or standing on old car tires and discarded plastic milk jugs.

The recently paved path is unique because the asphalt contains recycled shingles, and the pavers, manufactured by VAST™, are made using scrap car tire rubber and recycled plastics.

"We're calling it the green trail," said Jerry Augue Jr., project manager for Ramsey County, who worked with Maplewood and the state to develop the path. "It's about the greenest thing we've built."

Recycled materials were critical for successful completion of the project. In fact, recycled materials were used in as much of the project as possible, said Greg Mack, the county's director of Parks and Recreation.

A grand opening for the trail was held on November 15, 2007.
